Course Description

Students 18 and up encouraged to enroll.

Beginner Ballet gives students with little or no dance experience the opportunity to explore the possibilities of ballet in an open and supportive environment that focuses on establishing an understanding of ballet basics, including technique and skill.

Over the course of six classes students will work on turn-out, positions of the feet and arms, body directions, correct alignment and posture, musicality, flexibility, strength, elevation and agility as well as artistic quality. We will continuously think about the use of breath, and the freedom to move through any existing limitations we may feel we have.

We will also use the class to address individual concerns, learn how to overcome technical and artistic difficulties, and confront some of the fears that are particular to the study of ballet. By the end of the class students will have developed an understanding of the form and how they can engage in ballet in a way that enhances their quality of life.

To succeed in this class you only need to be excited to dance; you do not need to be a dancer or have a dance background. Students will be expected to be open and available for new approaches to ballet. They should also feel comfortable to ask questions for clarification. Nothing should feel forced or cause pain, and students are encouraged to communicate how the practice is impacting their bodies. Dance class is a unique and holistic learning experience that engages the entire person–body, mind and spirit–and Beginning Ballet is a great place to start.
