Course Description

Instructors: Abigail Whitman & Aaron Martin

Designed for actors, dancers, musicians, writers, and performing artists of all types, Experimentation and Expression for Performing Artists takes you on a journey of discovering your own voice within the vast and complex tradition of performance. Guided by the creative team of Abigail Whitman (she/they), CalArts Faculty, and Aaron Martin (he/him), Harvard-Westlake Performing Arts Chair and Faculty, students study and practice both traditional and experimental performance techniques, and work collaboratively to develop and perform original creative pieces based on their own inspirations and lived experience.

This intensive two-week program takes place in state-of-the-art performing arts facilities on the Harvard-Westlake campus. During the first week of the program faculty will introduce students to influential and inspiring works–both traditional and experimental–from a variety of genres, and provide opportunities for students to practice new techniques and forms of expressions. During the second week, faculty will provide mentorship and support to help artists identify and hone their creative style while creating new works.

Learner Outcomes

By the end of the program students will have broadened their understanding of performance and identified new creative pathways, and their progress and accomplishments will be showcased in an end-of-course performance featuring personal and collaborative works suitable for college application portfolios.
